With an insight into ten bespoke patterns that can be easily followed, starting with a cute racoon and progressing to the more advanced sloth. Knapek's book is a fresh and simple take on the amigurumi crochet technique used to create cute, simple, three-dimensional toys and objects. The author begins with basic crochet tips and advice for reusing materials, such as saving bits of scrap yarn or repurposing old pillows for stuffing projects. The projects include key rings; toys of all sizes, including special comforting toys without any plastic components, for very young children; hats and mustaches with which to accessorize the toys; and Christmas baubles. The pictures for the assembly of each project are especially helpful, as that can be difficult. The conclusion encourages readers to create their own patterns from the basic shapes of the shown designs, but this section could have been much larger, especially since it is mentioned in the subtitle. VERDICT A great introduction to amigurumi crochet and crafting three-dimensional creatures. Recommended for most public libraries.--Caitlin Loving

Crafter Knapek debuts with a colorful guide to crocheting amigurumi, or small yarn animals. The patterns and projects include tiny ornaments, key chain accessories, and toys resembling such animals as foxes, raccoons, whales, and hippos. Knapek walks readers through the basics, with photographs demonstrating how to execute single, half-double, double, and triple crochets. Most of the projects rely on single crochet, such as the cute yellow octopus with tentacles that look “like a skirt,” or the slightly more advanced magic circle technique used to create the rotund body and head of a hippo. The author encourages readers to customize the projects, noting that the hippo design could be modified to become a pig, and details how to make accessories for the animals, including various hats and a handlebar mustache. The animals are cartoonish and adorable, though the variety of stitches used in the designs means there may be a bit of a learning curve for beginners. Intermediate crocheters will get a kick out of these charming creatures.
